The classic Dodge D100 pickup truck is described as the coolest of its car type from its time. The -long D series (from 1961-1971) increased capacity and durability for pickups with its 34-inch cross members and straight frame rails. It's also the first series that welcomed the use of alternators, Chrysler's latest tech innovation at the time, which extended car batteries to far greater capacities.

Some claim that the D100 also has the biggest interior of any classic pickup truck. As V8 engines grew in popularity, the truck also received this premium treatment in 1954 with the first 241-cubic-inch Red Ram HEMI engine. More than half of the long wheelbase models were built with the 318 V8, while many of the smaller versions didn't need it as much.

Needless to say, Dodge doesn't make its own trucks anymore, especially since they faded into the Dodge RAM. Fortunately, Parts in the D isn't short of both brands.

Maintenance Recommendations for Dodge D100

Though you should definitely refer to your owner's manual first, here are some general recommendations for keeping pickup trucks working even after decades of use:

  1. Tires: though you likely only need to change your tires every 2-3 years, you might want to get your wheels realigned twice as much. Of course, always keep your tire pressure properly maintained, as it can improve your fuel efficiency on the road.
  2. Fluids: oil, coolant, power steering, brake, and transmission fluids all need a check-me-up quite often, especially for older trucks like D100. If you find any indication that these fluids are problematic, then it's time to change them.
  3. Electrical system: making frequent stops to transport your cargo can also affect your car's battery. Keep checking your batteries, alternators, and other parts of the electrical system every year to make sure that everything is alive and well.
  4. Gearbox and clutch: carrying heavier loads on your trailer makes your gearbox and clutch work harder than they would on an ordinary car. It's advisable to check them at around 2 to 3 years at a time.
  5. Fifth wheel platform: adjust and grease your truck's fifth wheel platform whenever it's necessary and make sure to clean it whenever you get an oil change, or a faulty platform may even prevent you from going on the road.
